Elkins made his UFC debut on Versus 1’s preliminary program, defeating Duane Ludwig by TKO after Ludwig sustained a significant ankle injury after being put down by Elkins in the first round.

His next fight was against Charles Oliveira in the UFC Versus 2 preliminary event. Elkins quickly took Oliveira, but his opponent promptly tried a triangle choke. Oliveira then applied an armbar, forcing Elkins to submit.

Elkins was scheduled to meet highly regarded prospect Edson Barboza on November 20, 2010, at UFC 123. However, Darren was forced to withdraw due to an injury and replaced Mike Lullo.
