Vince Dooley was an American college football coach and athletic director (1979 to 2004) at the University of Georgia (UGA).
Dooley attended Auburn University (bachelor’s degree in business management 1954, Master’s degree in history 1963), where he played football and later coached under Ralph “Shug” Jordan.
As an undergraduate at Auburn, Dooley was a member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. He served in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry officer.
Dooley coached at Georgia from 1964 to 1988 and served as athletic director from 1979 to 2004, overseeing some of the program’s most successful years.
Under his leadership, the Bulldogs went 201-77-10, including seven 10-win seasons and six SEC championships.
Dooley is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, as well as the Georgia and Alabama Sports Halls of Fame, and is Georgia football’s all-time winningest coach. During his tenure, the Bulldogs were ranked in the AP Top 25 12 times, including eight top-10 finishes.
From 2016 to 2018, Dooley was the Chairman of the Georgia Historical Society’s Board of Curators.
Vince Dooley died peacefully at his Athens home in the presence of his wife, Barbara, and their four children on Friday, October 28, 2022.
