In Oak Forest, Illinois, Coleman attended Oak Forest High School. He performed back running, wide receiver, and cornerback, and gave back kicks and punts as well. He’s been named the year’s 2011 Southtown Star Player. He rushed on 83 carries with 13 touchdowns for 949 yards as a senior, and also had 16 receptions for 345 yards and five touchdowns.
Coleman was also on the track & field team of the school, where he was competing as a sprinter and jumper. As a high school student, he was one of the best 100-meter sprinters and long-jumpers in Illinois state. At the 2011 IHSA State Championships, he completed fourth in the 100 m at 10.86 and finished second in the long jump, gaining a personal-best mark of 7.16 meters.
At the 2011 Thornton Classic Meet, Coleman took gold in the long jump with a mark of 6.88 meters and finished second in the 100 m at 10.8 seconds. At the 2011 IHSA 2A State T&F Championship, he finished 100 meters in a 10.5-second PR.
Considered a three-star recruit by the Rivals.com recruiting network, Coleman was ranked as the No. 37 running back nationally in 2012. He chose Indiana over scholarship offers from Georgia Tech, Minnesota, and Michigan State.

After high school, he chose Indiana over Georgia Tech, Minnesota, and Michigan State scholarship offers, partly because he wanted to stay close to home. Ranked as No. 37 running back nationally in 2012, he started playing college football as a true freshman for Indiana University.
While with the Indiana Hossier, he played on 51 attempts in 12 games with two starts and rushed for 225 yards; one touchdown; 566 kick return yards. Playing as a sophomore in 2013, he only played nine games and missed three after sustaining an ankle sprain; he finished the year with 958 rushing yards on 131 carriages and 12 touchdowns.
He was named as one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Awards on November 25, 2014, along with running backs Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin) and Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska). He finished with 2,036 yards during his 2014 junior season, making him the 18th player in the history of NCAA Division I FBS to reach 2,000-yard rushing mark in one season. The score also broke the single-season record of the school.
Coleman announced his decision to skip the senior season and enter the 2015 NFL Draft on December 29, 2014. He started his professional career in 2015 after signing a four – year contract worth $ 3.2 with a signing bonus of $ 745,244 with the Atlanta Falcons.
He has been a groundbreaker in the game so far, playing a total of 40 games, rushing 1,540 yards; with 14 touchdowns; 5 forced fumble and only 3 losses.
