Following his sixth year, he attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama currently known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, where he graduated in 2003.

Heughan got his first television role in the miniseries Island at War, a WWII drama about the German occupation of the Channel Islands in 2004.
