The Celtics performed the first of two ceremonies that will be held this season to remember Russell, who passed away on July 31 at 88. There were tributes to his life and work all over the TD Garden.
The club also sported No. 6 patches on their limited-edition jerseys, featuring a Celtics script modeled after the Slade’s Bar and Grill eatery that Russell had previously owned.
There were video tributes showcasing some of Russell’s most significant on-and off-court achievements. 11 gold diamonds ran down the sides of the uniforms, representing the 11 championships Russell helped Boston win over a 13-year period during his illustrious career.

Russell’s childhood was terrible as he was born into a family that faced racial discrimination daily. The Russell family regularly faced prejudice because Monroe was highly segregated like nearly all Southern towns and cities at the time.
Once, Russell’s father was forced to wait at a petrol station until the personnel attended to all the customers first. The attendant confronted him with a shotgun as he tried to leave and go to a different station, threatening to shoot him if he didn’t wait.
In another incident, a policeman stopped Russell’s mother while walking outside in a fancy dress. He told her to go home and take off the dress, calling it “another woman’s garb.”
The Second Great Migration started during World War II as many people of his race moved to the West in search of employment. When Russell was eight years old, his father relocated the family from Louisiana to Oakland, California.
They were impoverished there, and Russell spent his formative years in several public housing projects.
As sports journalist John Taylor observed, his father was described as a “stern, hard man” who started as a janitor at a paper factory, a typical Negro job, a low-paying and not academically difficult.
The elder Russell switched to driving trucks when World War II started. When Russell’s mother, Katie, passed away unexpectedly when he was 12 years old, it dealt him a severe emotional blow because he was closer to her than his father.
To be nearer to his kids, his father quit driving trucks and started working as a steelworker. Russell claimed that his father was his first hero as a child, followed by Minneapolis Lakers superstar George Mikan, whom he first met in high school.
