Robert Downey Jr is an American actor, Film Producer and Comedian famous for his mind-blowing portrayal of the characters Chaplin, Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man.
Robert John Downey Jr was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan, New York, the US to filmmaker Robert Downey Sr and actress Elsie Ford.
Downey’s parents divorced when he was just 13 and he ended up living in Los Angeles with his father. However, at the age of 16, he dropped out of high school in California and returned to New York to live with his mother where he pursued an acting career.
Robert Downey Jr actually made his first on-screen appearance at the age of five, as a puppy in his father’s film Pound (1970). He went on to make cameo appearances in five more of his father’s films between the year 1972 and 1990.
From 1985 to ’86, Robert Downey Jr became a regular cast member of Saturday Night Live, NBC’s popular sketch-comedy program. He got his first major blockbuster hits ‘Tropic Thunder’ and ‘Iron Man’ in 2008 for which he received worthy recognition for.
In Iron Man, he played the quirky role of comic book Tony Stark, a sarcastic billionaire inventor who is a part-time superhero. He also took on the leading role of self-important movie star Kirk Lazarus in the satiric comedy ‘Tropic Thunder’. For the latter role, the actor walked away with an Oscar nomination for his performance.
Robert Downey Jr’s characterization of ‘Chaplin’ (1992) is unarguably one of his biggest achievements until now and has won him a BAFTA Award. He has also won a Golden Globe Award and Screen Guild Award for ‘Ally McBeal (2001)’, Golden Globe Award for ‘Shorcuts (1994)’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes (2009)’ and 2 People’s Choice Awards for ‘The Avengers (2013)’.
