Randall Claude Weaver was a key figure in the 1992 Ruby Ridge standoff. Weaver, his family, and a buddy called Kevin Harris were involved in an armed confrontation with US Marshals and FBI officers.
A federal sniper later shot Weaver in the back. The same sniper also shot Harris. Vicki Weaver, who was standing outside the Weaver’s front door when Harris was shot, was killed by the same bullet. Vicki was carrying the family’s newborn daughter.
Weaver turned himself up to federal agents 11 days after the event began. He was charged with murder, conspiracy, assault, and other offences. Except for failing to appear in court for the original guns, he was acquitted of all charges.
Weaver received an 18-month jail sentence. His family eventually won $3,100,000 in compensation for the deaths of his wife and kid at the hands of federal officers.
