Michael “Mike” Singletary (born October 9, 1958) is a former professional football player and coach in the United States. Singletary was selected in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears after playing college football for the Baylor Bears. He was regarded as “The Heart of the Defense” for the Chicago Bears’ Monsters of the Midway in the mid-1980s. In 1998, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Singletary subsequently became a coach, first with the Baltimore Ravens as a linebackers coach, and then with the San Francisco 49ers as a linebackers coach. After former head coach Mike Nolan was dismissed during the season in 2008, the 49ers elevated Singletary to head coach, and he stayed in that role until the end of the 2010 season, when he was fired.
