Maxwell Holt Quote
“It’s fitting that we end like that. This whole tournament we’ve been fighting for our lives. We weren’t going to go down like that. Everybody just dug deep. It took us a couple of sets to get going.
But once we figured out their schemes and put a better game plan together to stop their big boys and served a little more aggressively, we just fought.”

HOLT
Being born in Ohio and thinking about becoming a pro volleyball player is hard, very hard, almost utopian. Volleyball was a minor sport until 20 years ago, more feminine than masculine. Basketball, baseball, football, and even soccer came before volleyball. I practiced all the aforementioned sports, and even more until I was 16.
I had an aptitude for volleyball, I understood it, I felt comfortable serving, blocking, spiking, it seemed natural, but I needed something to shake things up. I think nothing in life happens by chance, and that includes my meeting with coach Angel Miller-El. Angel opened my eyes, she made me understand that volleyball could have been my life, that even a guy from Cincinnati could become a pro and turn his passion into his work.
Together, we decided that I should participate in a big tournament, a sort of trial that many coaches would have attended. I just turned 17 and my life changed. I played well and I was noticed by Penn State. They offered me a scholarship, which I accepted. I moved out of my house and my life would have been “volleyball only” since them.
Did I ever feel lonely? Yes, when I was 24, in Russia. I just broke up with my girlfriend because we both understood that a long-distance relationship wasn’t going to work. I didn’t understand Russian, I was feeling very uncomfortable. In my first month in Russia, in a town and with people that I would have discovered just later, I often thought about how much I missed my family. I have always been very close to my brothers and my parents.
Nicholas is 2 years older than me and Sam 6 years younger. I’m the middle child, the link between Nicholas and “the puppy”. We’re all mama’s boys, mom brought us up. Nicholas had a great passion for cars and now works as a mechanic. Sam plays pro volleyball in Belgium. We all had the Ohio state tattooed on the same day, despite being so different, so distant but also so close.
Angela, my mum, is good and strong, she has the energy needed to handle 3 sons much taller than kids the same age and triple the energy. Kim, my dad, is a totally different person and maybe that’s what makes them so special and so close. He’s very humble and easygoing, he doesn’t like to fly, he never came to visit me in Modena, he has a bad relationship with technology, his life is all dedicated to his job.
If I think about home, I think about music, my guitar, my mum singing Ella Fitzgerald and charm me with her voice. My passion for music developed during my high school days. I was listening to 70s rock icons such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I used to hang out with my friends, singing in the car and playing together, always me, Joe and Zack. When I was 17, for Christmas, I had my first guitar.
I was spending up to 5 hours a day playing Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’. I remember how hard I worked to be able to play Blackbird by The Beatles, it’s more than a song, it’s a wonder. When I play, I can relax, I can leave the world outside and be alone with my music and my voice, it’s magical.
I think it’s very important to feel good when you’re alone in order to get along well with others, especially in this day and age. We spend a lot of time on social networks, we’re constantly bombed by fake news that generates a lot of hate. I think about my country and I see something I could have never imagined. Donald Trump is the most prominent example.
I never thought that such a guy could become POTUS. It’s very hard for me to accept that, but nevertheless, it happened. He played and is playing a part, he’s an actor, but, still, he’s my President. Nowadays, we’re all on one side or the other, those who hate him and those who worship him. I think we should just hold on, accept that he’s the POTUS and find some common ground to work with.
I have the Gestalt psychology symbol tattooed on my right arm. I took a concept from that psychology and turned into my mantra. “Don’t ever judge anybody, be always ready to understand others, let them speak and try to welcome them”.
CHRISTENSON
I’m a husband, a father and a human being before I’m an athlete. I play volleyball, but, most of all, I’m somebody that tries to get better every day and learn something. To me, being a good husband is the top priority. Brooke (his wife) is the most important thing for me. She’s my best friend, I chose her and she chose me. She gave me Ezekiel (his son), our wonder.
Brooke is my partner and together we have to bring up Zeke, a wonderful child. We met 6 years ago when I was at USC. We were both studying biology, I was 20 and I found what true love means. My son changed both our lives and, most of all, changed priorities. Zeke is part of our team and, together, we’re so strong.
Family, in Hawaii, holds a central role and the very concept of family is hard to explain. It’s something universal, like the respect for elders. If we were in Hawaii, I would call you “uncle”, I would call you by your nickname and I would have done so since the day we shook hands for the first time. You would have called me “nephew”.
In Hawaii, all are based on the Aloha spirit, a concept made of love, closeness, solidarity, friendship, and brotherhood. It becomes part of you since you’re a child, never goes away and you try to spread it to the ones you meet. We’re very proud people, we’re proud of our roots and of what they represent, we’re both Hawaiians and Americans and we never forget that, no matter where we are.
When I think about my childhood, I think about all those days at the beach with Kupono Fey (his cousins, he plays in Sora) and his family. We rented a beach house for 2 days and went surfing, crab hunting and playing. At night, when everyone else was sleeping, we went back to the beach with lights and started exploring. We were inseparable and we had a lot of fun.
Family parties were spectacular, there were 40-50 persons in the backyard and there was this great feeling in the air. We ate together, somebody played some music, there was a high sense of freedom and a great desire of living that are both a key part of our culture. I believe in God and Proverbs 3:5-6 is my guide. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”.
What about volleyball? I think back to when I, my sister Joanna and my cousins used to inflate balloons and spent hours trying to keep them up. I was in love with the ball since I was a kid. My mum has been a good volleyball player, while my dad would have made it to the NBA if it wasn’t for a serious knee injury.
I was playing both sports, then I was called to play with the Junior USAV team when I was 16, 2 years younger than my teammates, and I was starting. That moment, I understood that I could go to the Olympics by playing setter so I took that road and that road made me go far.
My first months in Italy were very hard. Brooke remained in the US and I was suddenly alone in a brand new reality. There were no American players in Lube and the culture was completely different. In Italy, there’s much more pressure than the one I feel when I play with NT. When I wear USAV jersey, I play for myself, my teammates and the fans.
When I wear my club jersey, it’s different. I’m aware that what I do on the field has a big influence on other people’s work and, therefore, life, so in a way, I’m responding to what happens to all the team’s staff.
I’m always hungry, I’m always determined to do better. Competition is what wakes me up in the morning, it’s a fire that burns inside of me, it’s what makes me give 100% during games and practice. I love to challenge my teammates, it motivates me, I like to tease them during the 6-on-6. “Hey, Ivan (Zaytsev), why don’t you try a cut shot when I’m on the first row?”. “Hey, Anza (Anzani), are you afraid to serve on me?”.
“Come on, Dani (Mazzone), why can’t you block me?”. They do the same with me, obviously. During practice we work hard, we yell at each other, we let it all out, it’s a game within a game.
Understanding that you’re working while doing the thing you like the most is a great gift and I think about it every time I go to the gym. When I retire, I’ll miss the competition badly, but I’m not afraid. A phase of my life will be over and another one will begin. It will be as good as this.
