Alexander Martin Clunes OBE DL (born 28 November 1961) is an English actor, comedian, director, and television presenter. He is best known for portraying Martin Ellingham in the ITV comedy-drama series Doc Martin and Gary Strang in Men Behaving Badly.
Meet Alec Clunes, and Daphne Clunes
Alec Clunes and Daphne Clunes are Alexander Martin Clunes’ parents. Alexander Sheriff de Moro Clunes (17 May 1912 – 13 March 1970) was an English actor and theatrical manager.
Alec was twice married to actress Stella Richman, later a television producer, and to Daphne Gillian Acott, with whom he had one son, actor Martin Clunes. Alec Clunes died from lung cancer on 13 March 1970, aged 57. He left a widow, his son, and a daughter, Amanda Clunes.
Alec began his stage career with Ben Greet’s company before playing at the Old Vic theatre in 1934. He played numerous Shakespearian roles, before taking over the management of the Arts Theatre, London in 1942, where he remained until 1950. He later ran a theatre bookshop in Cecil Court.
Daphne Clunes is the mother of Martin Clunes and the widow of Alec Clunes.
