Katherine Sarafian, born Katherine Marianne Sarafian is an American film producer. She started at Pixar Animation Studios as an artist but was shifted from the art department to marketing during the making of A Bug’s Life by Pixar head Steve Jobs. She then became a producer at Pixar Animation Studios.
She has been an integral part of the success and growth of the company, holding a variety of key leadership positions that have culminated in her role as producer on Disney Pixar’s the Academy Award-winning feature film “Brave.” Sarafian joined Pixar in 1994 as a production coordinator on the studio’s first full-length feature film, “Toy Story.”

Katherine Sarafian Family
Sarafian was born to Armenian parents. She is the middle of three children, was raised in San Leandro, California, by her parents; mother Alice Izmirian, active in San Leandro civic affairs, and her father Richard Sarafian Jr., a pastor of the Saint Vartan Armenian Church of Oakland who died in 2009. Sarafian’s Armenian heritage and religious upbringing, due to her father being a pastor, have been a central influence.
“Faith can’t play a role in your life. I looked a lot at my father, a priest in the Armenian church, who was not great at managing people. He was a heart-based leader, while my mom was a businesswoman. I thought I was more like my mom, more of the business-style leader,” Sarafian explained.
“Working on ‘Brave’ was incredibly hard, but it was interesting to discover how much more of my father I am than my mother. It’s the compassionate leaders I try to emulate; I don’t always get it right, but I looked to my dad for that when he was here. Now that he’s gone, it’s more of ‘What would dad do?’ How would he treat this problem?” she continued.

Sarafian is a married woman. She is married to visual effects specialist Meher Gourjian, whose production credits include work in Harry Potter and whom she married during her six years of producing Brave. Sarafian gave birth to two sons during the six years of production time.

In an interview, Sarafian says she remembers the first production she saw was “Annie.” In high school, she was very involved in theater, and she always wanted to be a part of every aspect of the productions.
