Jürgen Flimm was a theater and opera director and manager from Germany. Flimm worked as a director at the National Theatre Mannheim and as a senior director at Hamburg’s Thalia Theater (1973-1974), and then as a freelance director and director at the Schauspiel Cologne.
In the summer of 2000, Flimm staged a new version of Wagner’s Ring for the Bayreuth Festival, and in June 2002, Flimm was in charge of the scenic realization of Friedrich Cerha’s world premiere of Der Riese vom Steinfeld at the Vienna State Opera.
Flimm served as president of the Deutsche Bühnenverein (German Stage Association) from 1999 to 2003, and as director of drama at the Salzburg Festival from 2002 to 2004. Flimm was the RuhrTriennale’s director from 2005 to 2007, succeeding founding director Gerard Mortier. From 2007 to 2010, Flimm was the artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, and from 2010 to March 31, 2018, Flimm was the director of the Berlin State Opera.
