Tush Push has been legal since the 2005 amendment in the NFL rule. It lifted the term that prohibited the pushing of the offensive players.

Before the changes in the regulations, athletes were not allowed to push the offensive players. In 2005 the league removed the phrase which made a way for the action to come to the field. 

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Siranni commenced the play in the NFL and quarterback Jalen Hurts executed and completed almost all of the plays so magically. 

There have been various talks on regarding the legal grounds of the action but the League has not said anything about its unacceptability.

Previously those teams that criticized and hated the Eagles Brotherly Shove are now copying the same infamous action and incorporating it into their offense. 

It has not been so gaining for other NFL teams and they should most probably check their offense if they really want to get success from the rugby sneak. 

Last season when the play was getting hype and the Eagles and the NFL were frequently questioned about the legality, the League sent a memo stating a rule that clearly said, “The runner cannot be pulled” but it does not state that he cannot be pushed.

Is The NFL Banning Tush Push?

NFL tush push ban is not happening any sooner as it is fully legal. The League is also silent about it and will review the play after the 2023 season.

Richard Sherman, who is a former NFL CB writes on X, “My problem with the play is the NFL literally banned defensive players from pushing other players into the offensive formation on FG and PATs because it was a “Health and safety issue.”

He further added, “but now it’s ok because it benefits the offense?” Sherman hit directly at what he felt the act as the NFL’s hypocrisy.

Similarly, the former defensive end J.J. Watt wrote in support of the play accepting the fact that the Eagles would still succeed in the QB sneak if the push was not allowed in the game. The real reason for their success is their strongest offense. 

The League on the other hand will currently observe the injury rate during the execution of the action and decide upon it once the season ends. 

Eagles Tush Push Success Rate

Eagles Tush Push Success Rate is 93.3% in the 2023 season. The Eagles lead the NFL in the play with a total of 17 brotherly shoves to date.

Only one play did not reward the franchise but succeeded in all others. The team’s rate of success in the 2022 season was 93.5% which was higher than the mark today. 

This is because of the volume of the actions the squad executed last season. The Eagles ran the play 43 times last year which included the six times run for two touchdowns in the Super Bowl. 

This season, they have run it six times in just one game while playing against the Los Angeles Rams. More than 71 such plays have been executed this year by other teams but their success is not so promising. 

The Eagles seem to have mastered the play already and are the only team in the League with such massive success through the action. 

If we exclude the number of the Eagles from the data of sneak successes in the NFL, it is 77.8% this season which shows that the excitement over the sneaks is increasing. 

Is Brotherly Shove in Practice in Other Teams?

NFL offenses have started seeking if they can also equally exploit the advantages from such sneaks as the Eagle does. The Bears stand below the Eagles.
