Elie Samaha (Arabic:?) (born May 10, 1955 in Zahlé, Lebanon) is a nightclub owner, real estate developer, and film producer in Los Angeles, with credits dating back to 1995’s The Immortals. Samaha has created over 83 works, the most of which are films with a few video games thrown in for good measure. In this role, he has only received one award: a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture, which he shared with John Travolta and Jonathan D. Krane for the film Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000, released in 2000. Between 1998 and 2004, Samaha was the studio behind Battlefield Earth and other films under the Franchise Pictures banner. Samaha was known for saving celebrities’ pet projects. Franchise looked for stars whose projects had been delayed at big studios and brought them on board at a lower salary. Samaha’s strategy created ripples in Hollywood, giving him the reputation of being able to make star vehicles at a lower cost than the major studios. His unusual business dealings aroused concerns, with Variety observing that they were “sometimes so complicated and varied as to leave onlookers scratching their heads.” “I asked, ‘If John [Travolta] wants to create this movie, what does he want to be paid?'” Samaha stated in an interview about Battlefield Earth. … I don’t pay them what they earn because I don’t pay them what they make.
