Calvin Coolidge “Cal” Worthington (November 27, 1920 – September 8, 2013) was an American auto salesman who was most known on the West Coast of the United States, and to a lesser degree abroad, for small roles and parodies in many films. He was well recognised for the Worthington Dealership Group’s distinctive radio and television commercials. He was frequently accompanied by “his dog Spot” in these ads, although “Spot” was never a dog. Spot was often a tiger, seal, elephant, ape, or bear. “Spot” was a hippopotamus in one advertisement, which Worthington rode. “Spot” was sometimes a vehicle, such as an aircraft, in which Worthington might be seen perched atop the wings while flying. Although “Spot” was formally retired in the mid-1980s, he was sometimes referenced in his subsequent advertisements. Worthington made $316.8 million in 1988, according to a feature published in the Sacramento Bee in 1990, making him the biggest single owner of a car dealership network at the time. Worthington was his sole customer, and his advertising firm, Spot Advertising, spent $15 million on ads, the highest of any car dealer at the time. From 1945 until his death, he sold cars and maintained a 24,000-acre (9,700 hectares; 38 sq mi) ranch near Orland, California, north of Sacramento.
