ELbert Leander “Burt” Rutan (born June 17, 1943) is an American aerospace engineer who is most known for his innovative designs of light, robust, unusually shaped, and energy-efficient aircraft. He has received many awards for his work. The record-breaking Voyager, the first plane to fly around the world without stopping or refuelling, and the sub-orbital spaceplane SpaceShipOne, which won the Ansari X-Prize in 2004 for becoming the first privately funded spacecraft to enter the realm of space twice in a two-week period are among his many accomplishments.
In addition to SpaceShipOne, he has five other aircraft on exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., the United States: the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, the Virgin Atlantic Voyager, the Quickie, and the VariEze.
