Originally from Canada, Robert Earle Clarke (born August 13, 1949), better known by his ice hockey nicknames Bob Clarke and Bobby Clarke, is a former professional ice hockey centre who spent his entire 15-year National Hockey League (NHL) career as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers, where he is currently an executive with the team. As one of the best two-way forwards in history, Clarke is generally regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. From 1973 until 1979, he served as captain of the Philadelphia Flyers, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in both 1974 and 1975. From 1982 to 1984, he served as captain of the Philadelphia Flyers before retiring. Clarke, a three-time Hart Trophy winner and entrant into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987, was ranked 24th on The Hockey News’ list of the Top 100 NHL Players of All-Time in 1998, according to the publication. Clarke had three seasons in which he scored 100 points, twice finished first in the league in assists, and appeared in eight NHL All-Star Games. In 1983, he was also awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which was given to the league’s greatest defensive forward. As soon as he finished his career with 358 goals and 852 assists for a total of 1,210 points in 1,144 career games at the conclusion of the 1983–84 season, he was promoted to general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers. He spent 19 of the next 23 seasons as the Flyers’ general manager, as well as short stints as the general manager of the Minnesota North Stars and the Florida Panthers. He led the Flyers to three Stanley Cup Final appearances and one with the Minnesota North Stars. In his tenure as an NHL general manager, he was embroiled in a number of controversies, probably none more so than the falling out he had with star player Eric Lindros in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He resigned from his role as general manager less than a month into the 2006–07 season and is now the Flyers’ Senior Vice President of Operations and Development.
