Retired basketball player, Avery Johnson has earned the name as NBA’a one of the top playmakers as well as has the extreme reverence of those playing in the league. The NBA’s former head coach took birth on the 25th of March, 1965 in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.
Sneaking into his personal life, Avery Johnson is a happily married man. He married his college sweetheart Cassandra Merricks on 6th of July 1991. The couple first met at the Southern University. In 1983, Avery led St. Augustine High School to the Class 4A Louisiana State Championship and 35-0 record, as a senior of high school. He matriculated at New Mexico Junior College prior to shifting on to Cameron University and then Southern University. In 1988, Avery led NCAA Division I by 13.3 assists for each game. In that season, Avery as well averaged 11.4 points for each game, making himself the first ever men’s Division I player to average assists and double figure in points in the same match. Though he managed to break a number of records, he could not make it to the NBA Draft upon the graduation. Following the summer season with the Palm Beach Stringrays, the Seattle SuperSonics signed him. He spent the next sixteen years playing in the National Basketball Association plus stints with the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets and Denever Nuggets. He is well celebrated for his games with the San Antonio Spurs. On 20th of February 2009, he was introduced to the “San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame”.
After retiring from playing on October 28, 2004, Avery was assigned as an assistant coach under Don Nelson by the Dallas Mavericks. He pranced the path to head coach from an assistant coach within five months. Under Avery, the Dallas ended the 2004-2005 season by a 16-2 run as well as an opening playoff victory against the Houston Rockets, prior to losing to strong team the Phoenix Suns in the 2nd round of playoffs. He was named NB Coach of the Month in April 2005. The followed up season was more successful for Avery. In November 2005, he was again honored with the NBA Coach of the Month Award. He worked as a studio analyst for ESPN/ABC for two seasons, since 17th of Ocotber 2008, until New Jersey Nets offered him to hold the post of head coach. On June 10, 2010, Avery was assigned as new head coach for the team. On December 27, 2012, he was discharged as head coach and P.J. Carlesimo took his position. He has made a number of television appearances and is well known for 2001’s “Pardon the Interruption”, 2005’s “Mike & Mike” and 1996’s “Eddie”.
